blue

In the search of pleasure and prayer, the sacred and the sane, I sometimes find the color blue.
Eventually the peace comes too.

wild blackberries

The road through our property is owned by the local electric co-op and they keep it well groomed. It used to bother me so much because I wanted wild and bushy. I wanted another buffer of cover between our retreat and the road. Yet I've come to find that all this "over-grooming" of thin tall trees has allowed the lowers bushy to grow and thrive. We now have a decent blackberry patch and the wild strawberries are coming in quite nicely below.

So off we went to harvest our abundance of berries.

As promising as it all looked, you can see that our harvest was quite meager!

so sad!

August break - sweetness

It was enough for a decent photo. There was a bit of sweetness behind the mouth-puckering tart of these little blackberries.

Hopefully more to come this weekend. If only we can get there before the all the black bears eat them up!

August Break: day three, handwriting

Late Fragment

by Raymond Carver

And did you get what
you wanted from this life, even so?
I did.
And what did you want?
To call myself beloved, to feel myself
beloved on the earth.

leaf

August Break 2016: Day two, leaf

Finding this leaf is bittersweet. The end of summer brings on autumn. And while autumn is my favorite season and incredibly beautiful in the northern parts of the midwest, the changing leaves also mean the end of summer. It's got me spinning in circles. This is indeed the perfect time for an August Break.

Funny how I always think I know more than nature. I remember last year on the river on a particularly warm day, a flock of geese flew by low over the water. I thought then that they must be lost. But sure enough the very next week the weather turned. So try as I might in saying this leaf is just heat stressed or just on a young oak tree, it likely means that summer is really coming to an end.

morning light

In an effort to reconnect with photography I spent July collecting color. Now it is time for an August Break which begins on day one with morning light.

The next photo makes me remember that August is the last month of summer and that the kid will be returning to school soon. How the light coming in through the backdoir will change by the next month. The change is coming but it certainly isn't here yet.

I had a photo selected for a juried exhibit at the Minneapolis Photo Center!!! Which was a big sign that I'm headed in the direction that is right for me. Who knows where that path will take me. For right now I'm just happy and grateful to have the freedom and mindfulness necessary to capture the light in whatever ways I can.
