Loosened from the mud, I find myself floating in a world of possibility.

So can you.

Wondering what I'm looking at? It was this spectacular view:

We avoided the overcrowded National Parks while in Moab. Well that's not entirely true. This view of the Needles section of the Canyonlands National Park is technically within park boundaries and a very well made viewpoint complete with picnic tables and such. But it can only be accessed by a dirt road so we had the place to ourselves. Yes the National Parks in the area are amazing but each year there are more and more tourists. Luckily we don't have to do much to avoid them and trying to do so leads us to new discoveries, but i can't help thinking that our secret is out. The secret is visiting these places on the off-season.

The paved and developed areas of these parks are packed full but no doubt, repeat visitors are going to start thinking about how to access the more rough and tumble areas of the park. Just like we have done over the years. So I give it another 5 years or so before the less-easy-to-access areas will start to fill up.

I'd like to say that the solitude I found led me to some deep thoughts but it didn't. And maybe that's how it is supposed to be because what did happen is that my mind cleared and I just spent the few minutes I had to myself breathing the crisp, cold desert air.

  1. I totally agree about seeing the parks in the off season. Your trip looks wonderful, and I hope your prediction of five years is too short!

    1. Yes, I do too! But I don't imagine anyone could risk getting off the paved roads to see more of the parks. Thanks, Deonne! The trip was really wonderful.
