my little leopard

She picked out her Halloween costume this year and I had to buy it because my machine sewing skills are non-existent (for now).  I totally would have picked something girly for her, but she has other ideas apparently.  She's been working on her roar for months.

soup season

I love when leeks come into season.  Usually I cook them up with chicken and apples, and  I did a couple of times already this Fall.  But I was craving soup, so these were used in leek and potato soup.  So delicious and perfect for this time of year.

gorgeous fall day

Eastside Food Co-op had it's 10 year anniversary party and annual meeting on Sunday.  I had put in a special order of great weather a month ago and the universe delivered!

I coordinated the volunteers, took photos, delivered a speech, introduced the guest speaker, organized the clean-up crew and at the end of the night, danced my butt off.  It was a long exhausting and exhilarating day!  I'm so glad it's all over but that's not to say that I didn't have a great time.  I met tons of people I'd never met before.  With my speech I felt like I made a public debut with the cooperative community.  One of my big dreams I identified this September was to be a community leader.  I've taken huge steps in that direction and to be frank, I'm quite proud of myself.

cilantro slows me down and that's a good thing

This is the busiest week and weekend of the Fall for me.  I can't wait to be on the other side.

Making the most of the summer harvest I realized that cilantro slows me down in a very good way.  It used to drive me nuts.  My mother insisted that I separate each individual leaf, stems were not acceptable.  Today I enjoyed the task and it will likely help me enjoy all the challenges that this weekend brings my way.

something I will never do for my kid

There are a lot of things I can do and there are a lot of things I do well but this is something I will never, ever do for the little Lotus Bud.

a little knit for myself

It was so great to move onto a little knitting project.  Sweaters take so much time and while I did a couple of smaller projects in the year that I worked on Bud's sweater, it has been a very long time since I knitted something just for myself.

The pattern was very satisfying once I learned it.  It had a rhythm that soothed me.  Of course, I had to tink more than I'd like to admit, but even the tinking was smooth.

I'm not used to this style of hat but I love it and I will make it work.

Best time of the year for SOOC

I do not think it's possible to capture a bad photo during the month of October.  It is also not possible to capture it all.

Rare Fall view

I realized that I can never capture this photo of the trailer any other time of the year.  There's usually either too much brush or too much snow.

2 Gingers

Whiskey is the thing to drink on a chilly Autumn night.  Especially if you are surrounded by the distant sounds of geese and coyote in the woods.  Whiskey keeps me warm and brave.

Autumn woods

D took the day off on Friday and we headed to WI.  It was a tough decision to stick with our plans what with all the illness in our family.  It was the best decision because the cool woodland air is so very healing.  The beauty of the woods in Autumn always takes my breath away.

October is my favorite month.

The sky is so bright in its blue and the colors of the trees never fail to amaze me.  I wish October would last longer but I'm sure that it's fleeting beauty of the season that delights me so.

Sick, again.

It was a rough week here but the week ended well.  We've all been sick, but the Bud has been the sickest.  Strep throat for my little one.  But worse than that - an allergic reaction to the antibiotics.  It was very scary.  Since this was her first time on this antibiotic I watched her closely and noticed swelling in her face within a few hours.  I refused to give her another dose and got a different prescription the very next day.  It happened in the best way that such a thing could happen.

But here's the thing.  It seems like all the things that happen to my little one happen to her face.  And she's got such a lovely face.  Her face is still swollen and I'm afraid it won't go back to her usual self.  All the anxiety makes me feel vain.  I just want her to get better and to be able to take all these emotions and box them up.  Box it all up and drop that box to the bottom of the Mississippi.

I didn't think I would have any photos but I did find one from the morning before the doctor's appointment.  I'm not so far behind in my photo project as I thought I was.

Pink is so last year...

I finally finished the sweater I started knitting in November 2012.  I was so excited to have it finished.  I know I need to block again, but it was great fun putting on the buttons I picked up in Moab, Utah.

I gave this "little buds" sweater to my little Lotus Bud and her response?  "Pink is not my favorite color, Moogy."  Ha!  Pink was her favorite color when I began knitting this, but now the favorite color is purple or violet (depending if she remembers the word for violet in the moment when she is asked).

This is a very good argument for finishing knitting projects in a timely manner.  A lot can happen in a year!

catching up with myself

It's been a busy few weeks and I have some catching up to do with the Lotus 365 project.  In the busy-ness of the last two weeks I managed to get some really fun and amazing photo days.  So while I did not stick to the plan of taking one photo a day, I did manage to get a series of photos that will sustain this project.  This the choice that I made early on - I would not chide myself for not keeping up, I will relish the quality of photos that come to me even if they happen only three out of the seven days of the week.

I've been thinking a lot about time management.  So many people I encounter these days are busy.  What's with that?  Are we all busier?  Are we are relishing the amount of activity in our lives?  I don't like it when I ask about someone's day and their response is "I'm busy."  Well we are all busy, please tell me something good that happened in that day, or tell me how you are feeling.  Lately I've been making a point to tell people about my excellent time management skills.  I am busy, but I still am finding ways to pull moments for myself and my family.

I have taken on a teaching job.  It is a commitment that only requires my time and energy for one day each month for three months (not including lesson plan prep).  While I am excited about this development in my life, unfortunately those three days that span three months also happen to occur on the same days as the biggest events of the year for the Co-op.  It is a necessity for me to build my time management skills and I love the challenge.  I will also be taking on more responsibility with the Co-op's Board of Directors.  It's good that I strengthen my ability to manage my time now before the pressures build.

This summer was very good for me and Autumn is off to an excellent start!  Autumn is my favorite time of year to capture photos.  So while catch-up can seem tedious, it actually something that I am enjoying on this rainy October afternoon.
