It was a good 19

We've had a lot of great anniversaries, but I think this year - the 19th anniversary - was the most fun!

The gift suggestion for 19 years is bronze.  Our gift to each other was a bronze bottle opener found on Etsy. It's engraved on both sides.  It takes care of the need to commemorate the date without worrying about gifts and cards and flowers.  This things is lovely, functional and perfect!

I had planned on taking more photos but you know how it is when photos are somewhat important so the pressure is on? That is exactly the moment when both the memory card and the wireless remote were acting strangely. On top of that, I just wanted to have fun.

Those are our good friends who claimed to not know how to skate.  But they were both good and I ended up being the awkward one on ice.

It turned out to be a night for phone cameras.

Dave is such a great skater, confident and casual.  He'd come around behind me, spin into skating in front, then grab my hands and pull me fast down the ice.  And oh my god, he is sexy on ice.  No kidding.  I just wanted to fall on him right there and do the you-know-what.  Instead I just fell.

This diva can skate!

Later we went for dinner at Charlie's.  A warm fire outside, a martini or two inside.

Oh yeah.  19 effing years!

Cheers to 19 more!

55

Still working on the self portraits.  I had to borrow D's camera to try this one out.  It needs work.  Unfortunately I didn't figure out this trick until late this evening.  If I had realized before I could have spent the weekend working on it.

Now that I'm nearly two months into this 365 project, maybe I should think more about some goals. Self portraits, perhaps. Maybe think about a series.

See. This is how my projects happen. I jump in, then later think about what it all means and if it means anything. So in that sense a 365 project is good for me, gives me plenty of time to sort it out.  This might not be the most productive way to go about it, but with my time limitations and tendency to wander, go where the river takes me, it's the only way for me to be right now.

I learned something about myself here.

Another lesson from this project is how much is revealed about myself.  Of course there are times when I take a photo just to get one for the project.  Then there are times where I try to set up a shot.  And that totally gives away things about myself.

Confessions, perhaps.  Like this...

Food and drink photography is not my strong suit.  The martini was, however, did the trick just fine.

54 more than two decades of change

At our Valentine's Day dinner, an old friend of mine surprised me with this photo. It was taken when I was 18, more than 23 years ago. How things change.

This week was all about trying self-portraits. It is a difficult and gut-wrenching process for me. Still emotionally wounded and hurting from my trip to Florida, all I see in these photos of myself is my mother, and sometime my sister. I'm more like than I would like to be - and not in just physical ways.

45 - 19 years!

I'm cheating a bit today because I took these photos yesterday.  But today's our 19 year anniversary and it seems appropriate to post these.

The plan: ice skating at the Depot, then dinner and drinks at Charlie's.  All with a couple of old friends, pre-Lotus Bud friends, drinking buddies.

Babysitter - check.
Outfit picked out - check.
Shower - check.

Love - check.

44 - busy day

Busy, but fun. Dropped Lotus Bud off at preschool, headed west to breakfast with some Mamas (sans little girls, but not without some infant love), then lunch meeting with a fellow Board Director. Good projects in the works that include a film and photos. This is most certainly going to be an interesting year.

41 - two birthday cakes

Can you believe my girl is 3? This is today's cake for Lotus Bud's birthday.

Here is the cake from a week and a half ago, celebrating with her Florida cousins.

I've made four cakes now, since my resolution to make at least one cake a month. I have to work on the appearance of these cakes. People skeptically take a piece. They do give me praise when they taste it. Yet that look of doubt is clear when they see my little baked masterpieces.

40 - mushrooms

Holy shiitake mushroom! I've never seen them so big. Maybe it's a franken-mushroom. Chopping it was fun. This is prep for the main brunch dish tomorrow: Tarragon-Mushroom Bread Pudding. Delicious and savory.

As I was chopping away at 10pm I realized that I loved this sort of knife work. I like the smooth slicing motion and the even pieces of mushroom lined up on the cutting board. Chopping prep is my favorite part of cooking, I think. Well right now anyway.

Do you like chopping? Do you think of it as a skill worth developing? I certainly do.

39 - Again...

...not in Moscow. This photo was taken this morning in NE Minneapolis. And it is my favorite in this pear series. I like the defining, white light shining off the side of the pears. The light seems fresh and promising, despite the shadows cast but the angle of the sun. It seems to add a depth to the photo that is lacking in the ones taken in the afternoon sun.

I'm taking another photo e-course with Andrea Scher and this week we are encouraged to be light seekers, to pay attention to light in the various daylight hours, to experiment photographing an object during different times of the day.

Yesterday's photo was taken in the mid-afternoon.  It was a cloud-covered day.

This next one is from late afternoon today.

Lots of sunshine. It's good to be prompted to take these few minutes in the day to take a photograph, to practice my art, to breathe into the moment while the clicking the shutter.

I would like to say no pears were harmed in the making of these photos, but these pears have been sitting around for a while. They should be pear sauce, but I keep them around because they are beautiful in the sunlight.

...just beautiful, snowy NE Minneapolis. Poor little, sad little, overripe pears. They soon will be transformed into pear sauce.

32 & 33

I made it through a whole month of the Lotus365 project. I did good. I even managed to take a new photo each day, something I had excused myself from at the beginning of this project. I do think I need to rethink my postings here. While I'm sure I am going to continue to take a photo everyday, I'm not sure I will continue to post a photo each day. Maybe I'll do once a week or smaller groupings. We'll see. A new month, a new direction. Here are the first two of the month.

This plant hangs in the kitchen in a mason jar full of water. It should be planted in soil but it fits so perfectly in that window. We've had this plant for many, many years. This is only the second year it has bloomed. And what beautiful, wet bloom it is.

Dave's diabetes kit. Since the first day I met him, the Big D has had type 1 diabetes. I believe this year marks twenty. Nineteen years ago his diabetes changed how we eat. I also think it is the driving force behind our desire to be adventurous and to make the most of what life has to offer.
